Histamine is a chemical substance found in our body that performs essential functions for the immune system, digestion, and central nervous system.

Since histamine is carried throughout the body by the bloodstream, it affects the gut, lungs, skin, brain, and the entire cardiovascular system, causing a wide range of symptoms. This makes histamine intolerance difficult to detect and diagnose. Histamine intolerance is more common in women than in men. Excess histamine causes allergy-like symptoms. Patients with histamine intolerance and those with food sensitivities or allergies have similar symptoms. Histamine intolerance may present with sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, flushing with skin redness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, urticaria, itching, atopic eczema, and dysmenorrhea. |
In addition, histamine intolerance is often caused by intestinal health problems, particularly small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO, dysbiosis). Other common causes of histamine intolerance include hyperpermeable bowel and gluten intolerance.
