Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted diseases.
More than 200 types of HPV have been recognized, but not all of them cause cancer
Only about a dozen types of HPV are known to cause cancer, and two particular types (HPV 16 and 18) are responsible for about 70% of all cervical cancers. While some types cause warts but not cancer, and some types cause no problems at all.

HPV can cause other types of cancer besides cervical cancer HPV is the leading cause of anal cancer and oropharyngeal cancer (cancer in the back of the throat). It is also responsible for about half of penile and vulvar cancer cases and about two-thirds of vaginal cancer cases. The fact: HPV also affects males. |
For cervical cancer:
The Pap test detects abnormal cervical cells that can cause cancer. All women should start cervical cancer testing (screening) at the age of 21. Women aged 21-29 years should have a Pap test every 3 years.
Starting at age 30, the preferred way to be screened is a Pap test combined with an HPV test every 5 years. This is referred to as co-testing and should continue until the age of 65.
