Growth and Development Retardation

Insufficient or inadequate secretion of growth hormone is the key reason for growth retardation. If a child grows less than 5 centimeters in a year, it is essential to investigate growth hormone deficiency. The disparity in height between the child and their peers will increase each year in such circumstances.

Growth and developmental retardation is a term describing young children who gain insufficient weight, do not grow as tall as expected, and have height and weight below the standard.

If there is a suspicion of growth hormone deficiency, a hormone test is undertaken to measure the level. As growth hormone is mostly secreted during sleep, a morning blood sample may not offer a completely accurate result. Therefore, before taking a blood sample, growth hormone-stimulating drugs are administered to repeat the tests.

Additionally, children who experience developmental retardation may encounter celiac disease and a deficiency in thyroid hormone. Detailed investigations will enable the identification of the condition that results in developmental retardation, and the appropriate course of treatment can be initiated accordingly.
