Leaky gut syndrome is a condition in which the tight junctions that form the barrier between the intestines and the bloodstream are compromised. This barrier allows only digested nutrients, minerals, and vitamins to pass from the intestines into the bloodstream. When the intestinal barrier is disrupted, harmful substances and toxins may enter the bloodstream, damaging the intestines. This barrier also traps toxins, microbes, and undigested food particles. When pathogens or incompletely digested nutrients enter the bloodstream, the immune system mounts an attack against these foreign substances. This can lead to a situation where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues.
Leaky gut syndrome can cause a variety of symptoms. Food allergies can manifest as immune system disorders, skin problems, neurological problems, vitamin deficiencies, untreatable depression, persistent headaches, fibromyalgia, constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue, and more. |
Our laboratory can diagnose permeable bowel syndrome - or 'leaky gut' - by measuring the amount of zonulin present in both blood and stool samples.
