Metabolic syndrome is a condition characterized by a diagnosis of obesity, elevated blood triglycerides, bad cholesterol (LDL cholesterol), blood sugar levels and insulin resistance (the hormone that regulates blood sugar), high blood pressure, and a decrease in levels of good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol).
All the disorders associated with Metabolic Syndrome result from consuming excessive calories and the body's insensitivity to the hormone insulin. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar, transporting glucose in the blood to tissues and enabling them to use it. More insulin is secreted to overcome insulin insensitivity and meet the glucose demand of the tissues. |
However, an increased insulin resistance would cause a rise in blood glucose and insulin levels. Excessive insulin secretion impacts fat metabolism in the liver, leading to disruptions in blood lipid levels and atherosclerosis. It also affects the kidneys, causing excessive salt retention and hypertension.
Tests to diagnose and treat Metabolic Syndrome include:
- Estimation of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)
- FBG, PPG, and Glucose tolerance tests
- Cholesterol profile, direct LDL-cholesterol measurement
- hs-sensitive CRP
- Insulin
- Microalbumin
